Charlotte Hornets vs. Boston Celtics Prediction (April 7th, 2026)

Charlotte Hornets vs. Boston Celtics - NBA Logo

The NBA regular season is winding down, and as it comes to a close, it creates a hectic betting environment. Big spreads, random scratches, and a sea of disinterested teams when it comes to competing and winning.

To avoid brutal spots, it’s important to prioritize betting on games where both teams have something to play for. We get that on Tuesday, as the Charlotte Hornets will want to avoid the NBA Play-In Tournament, and the Boston Celtics want to hold onto the 2-seed.

FanDuel has this one priced with a sizable gap, regardless, as the Hornets enter as 5-point road underdogs. Did they get the price right? Or should bettors hop on the Hornets to beat the spread?

I’ll run through the latest odds, dissect the key matchups, and work my way to a final Hornets vs. Celtics prediction.

Early Season Performance & Trends

Charlotte Hornets

It’s been a tale of two halves for the Charlotte Hornets, who got off to a terrible start (11-23) before waking up in January. Charlotte went 11-6 in January alone, and kept rolling in February (8-3) and March (10-5).

Charlotte was living up to who they usually are, but a switch was flipped around January, and this young and inconsistent bunch morphed into one of the best teams in the NBA.

That meteoric rise has resulted in a solid 43-36 record, and if they play their cards right, the Hornets could avoid the NBA Play-In Tournament altogether. Even if they have to play in it, their stellar form and maturing game has them looking like a team nobody wants to face.

Charlotte hasn’t lost any steam, either. They remain on fire, winning four straight and eight of their last 10. They’re even a respectable 22-17 on the road, and on Tuesday, they’ll hope to at least compete with a good Boston team at TD Garden.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics are a very different story, but certainly one that is still extremely tantalizing. This Boston team won it all two years ago, and after seeing star forward Jayson Tatum go down with a torn Achilles last year, it was safely assumed this would be a lost year for the Celtics.

Boston didn’t blink, however, as they handed the reins to Jaylen Brown, and he answered back with an MVP-level stat line. He kept Boston in play as a top-three seed for the majority of the year, while the eventual return of Tatum appears to have spearheaded an improbable run to a finish as the 2-seed.

Suddenly, a team that was appropriately punting the season is very much in the thick of things. If Boston can ice out the teams around them and clinch the 2-seed, they are set to enter the NBA Playoffs at full strength with a real shot at marching their way to the NBA Finals once again.

The recent form is strong, too. Boston sits just four games out of the top seed, and they’re three games ahead of the Knicks. They’re riding a three-game winning streak and have been extremely tough (8-2) over their last 10 games.

Head‑to‑Head / Historical Context

Charlotte and Boston have gone up against each other 129 times in team history. As you’d imagine, the Celtics own an 82-47 all-time series edge.

The series is tied 1-1 so far this year; however, with both games being rather lopsided. Boston had been dominating in the series, as they swept the Hornets (4-0) last year and have won seven of the last eight meetings.

Key Matchup Breakdown

Charlotte Offense

The Hornets’ offense is pretty versatile. LaMelo Ball leads the charge with 19.7 points and 7.1 assists per game, while he threatens defenses from long range consistently. This entire team is deadly from deep, while the rookie breakout of Kon Knueppel (18.7 ppg) is what has really allowed this team to take things to the next level.

Miles Bridges (17.3 ppg) and Brandon Miller (20.1 ppg) are also steady contributors, while freshly acquired guard Coby White provides a spark off the bench.

Charlotte ranks 12th in scoring, but they don’t do serious damage on the break or inside the paint. Rather, they let it rip from long range (43 three-point attempts per game) and own the third-best percentage from deep (38%) in the entire league.

The Hornets may live and die by the three, but they’re still efficient (55.4% Effective FG %) and are also lights out (3rd) at the free-throw line.

Boston Offense

The Celtics are finally at full strength, but due to injuries, their overall season numbers are a bit lacking. They have just the 21st-best scoring offense, and they rank dead last in transition scoring, while they’re also 27th in points scored inside the paint.

That’s the bad. The good news is they are highly efficient, and like Charlotte, they drop heavy volume from the perimeter while connecting at the league’s 9th-best rate. They’re also very good at converting at the charity stripe (6th), although they get there at a league-worst rate.

It’s tough to fully gauge Boston considering the weird season they’ve had with different players coming and going, but Jaylen Brown (28.7 ppg) has been the mainstay. He’s gotten helped out from long range by Derrick White (16.7 ppg) and Payton Pritchard (16.9), while a healthy return from Tatum (21.5 ppg) makes this team borderline unstoppable.

Defense/Pace

Both of these teams defend at a very high level. Charlotte’s 6th overall ranking in scoring defense is especially impressive considering their slow start to the year.

They’re league average in transition, but they’re 12th inside the paint and do a terrific job limiting outside volume, while ranking first in free throw attempts allowed. They also dominate the glass, ranking 3rd in rebounding.

Boston owns the league’s top scoring defense and are very stingy in transition. The Celtics own the best interior defense and rank 6th in rebounding, while they do a great job at limiting tips to the free throw line (3rd).

In terms of pace, both of these teams are on the slower side. Boston ranks dead last with 97.7 possessions per contest, while the Hornets rank 24th (100).

Individual Matchups to Watch

  • Three-Point Barrage: Both of these teams let if fly from long range and are top-10 at converting from deep. Boston hasn’t defended the deep ball very well, but the Hornets at least do a good job limiting perimeter looks.
  • In the Paint: Neither side has an edge down low. Both teams are very tough inside the paint, and we’re also dealing with two top-6 rebounding squads. The battle of the boards and interior scoring will be key to this game, but it’s a borderline wash on paper.
  • Free Throw Battle: Both teams are elite at the free-throw line, but they struggle to get there consistently. Charlotte gets there more often and allows the fewest free-throw trips in the NBA, giving them the edge in this area.

  • Charlotte is 49-30 against the spread this year.
  • Charlotte is 24-15 ATS on the road.

Over 219.5 (-112)

Celtics

-5 (-110)

-200

Under 219.5 (-108)

Charlotte is the rightful underdog on the road, but the spread does feel a tad thick considering their recent form and ATS numbers on the season.

The total is low, but both teams play slow and are also excellent defensively.

From a Bettor’s Lens

There is clear value with Charlotte against the spread. They’re even a live dog at +190, but Boston is still the better team and tough to beat at home.

The Under stands out here. Both teams play at a bottom-6 pace, and they’re both very strong defensively. Unless they’re both absurdly hot from long range, this game probably won’t be a wild shootout.

Situational Considerations

  • Coby White is listed as probable for Tuesday with a groin injury.

Best Bets & Confidence Levels

BetRationaleConfidence Level

Hornets ATS +5 (-110)

Charlotte has been in terrific form and has done very well against the spread. They have the defense and outside shooting to keep this game close.

7/10

Under 219.5 (-108)

Both teams play rather slow brands of basketball and offer top-10 defenses, so this game can safely be expected to be low-scoring.

7/10

Final Score Prediction & Closing Thoughts

Final Score Prediction: Boston Celtics 110, Charlotte Hornets 106

The Celtics are at home and technically still have something to play for. Assuming they don’t sit a bunch of guys, I’d imagine they play hard, try to win, and do just that.

Boston is very tough to beat in general, but they’re on another level on their home floor. Add incentive to keep winning, and my main Hornets vs. Celtics prediction is that Boston escapes with a win to move toward locking up the 2-seed in the Eastern Conference.

That said, the best pick here in terms of value is Charlotte to beat the spread. The Hornets have been in fantastic form; they are an incredibly tough out, and they still have plenty of motivation to keep winning games.

The Under is also in play when you factor in both of these defenses and Boston’s ultra-slow pace of play, but if you’re looking for one Hornets vs. Celtics pick, it’s Charlotte ATS.
