Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction (9/30/2026): AL Wild Card Game 2 Pick
The Red Sox have been shut out by the Yankees in two straight October games, a year apart, and Tuesday’s 9-0 loss left them one defeat from going home. Tonight they get Max Fried, who has allowed one run to Boston in 11 2/3 innings this season. We’re siding with him: New York Yankees moneyline at -135 (BetMGM), a Lean at 0.75 units, for Wednesday’s 8:00 p.m. ET first pitch in the Bronx.
It’s a Lean because Sonny Gray is no soft landing. He’s 18-5 with a 2.72 ERA, and he gave this Yankees lineup one hit in 7.1 innings in June.
Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
One More Loss and Boston’s Season Is Over
That’s where Game 1 left the Red Sox. It was a real game for six innings: Cam Schlittler kept Boston off the board, and New York led only 2-0 going to the bottom of the seventh. Then the Yankees scored two in the seventh and five in the eighth, capped by a Ben Rice grand slam. Rice finished 4-for-5 with two homers and six RBIs. Schlittler threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts, and Boston finished with three hits.
History isn’t kind to the team in Boston’s spot. MLB.com counts 21 of 24 teams that led a best-of-three Wild Card Series 1-0 going on to win it, and all nine home teams in that position swept. That’s history, not a forecast, but Boston now has to win twice in the Bronx.
Fried Has Allowed One Run to Boston All Year
He has, across two starts. Fried threw eight scoreless innings with nine strikeouts at Fenway on April 22, then gave up one run in 3 2/3 innings on August 29 in his first start back from a bone bruise in his throwing elbow. He carries a 1.93 career regular-season ERA against the Red Sox, and he opened last October’s Wild Card Series against them with 6 1/3 scoreless innings.
| 2026 | Sonny Gray (BOS, RHP) | Max Fried (NYY, LHP) |
|---|---|---|
| Season | 18-5, 2.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP | 5-5, 2.80 ERA, 0.99 WHIP |
| Starts / Innings | 29 / 169 | 20 / 112.2 |
| Strikeouts / Walks | 149 / 46 | 104 / 33 |
| Split that matters | 2.74 ERA in 15 road starts | 3.42 ERA in 9 home starts |
| Against this opponent | 2 starts, 13.2 IP, 3 ER, 12 K | 2 starts, 11.2 IP, 1 ER, 13 K |
| Last start | Sep 23 vs CLE: 6 IP, 0 ER | Sep 22 vs TB: 6.2 IP, 4 ER |
On the mound this is close to even. Gray has had the better season, and Fried’s home ERA is the number we like least. What tips it is the other half of the matchup: the lineup Gray faces is deeper than the one Fried does.
Boston’s Offense Ran Out of Gas in September
It hit .219 with a .651 OPS for the month and scored 71 runs in 24 games, under three a night. New York went the other way. From MLB’s own team splits for September 1 through the final day of the regular season:
- Boston: .219 average, .651 OPS, 2.96 runs per game.
- New York: .248 average, .726 OPS, 116 runs in 23 games (5.04 per game).
- Game 1: three Boston hits all night, and no runs.
- The one Boston strength here: it hit .248 with a .734 OPS against left-handers this season, a touch better than it hit righties.
Roman Anthony’s Hand Is the Question Nobody Can Answer Yet
Boston doesn’t know either. Anthony left Game 1 in the sixth inning after hurting his right hand on a checked swing, the same hand whose partially torn tendon cost him roughly 117 games between May and late August. Manager Chad Tracy said afterward “it’s hard to say right now” whether he can play tonight, and no imaging had been scheduled by the end of the game.
The Yankees are shorthanded too, and in a bigger way. Aaron Judge is inactive with a right soleus strain, and lefty reliever Ryan Weathers is off the roster with a flexor strain. New York scored nine in Game 1 without him, but Gray is a tougher assignment. MLB.com’s batting orders were projections this morning, so check the official lineups before you bet.
The Yankees Price Climbed Overnight
Yes, by about a dozen cents at the biggest books. Our odds archive picked up the first Game 2 prices at 11:22 p.m. ET Tuesday, with DraftKings at Yankees -129. It hit -136 within half an hour and -142 by 4:22 a.m.; FanDuel sat at -134 all night before jumping to -142 at 6:12 a.m. The total hasn’t moved off 6.5.
| Time (ET) | DraftKings NYY | FanDuel NYY | Pinnacle NYY |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tue 11:22 p.m. | -129 | -134 | – |
| Wed 1:30 a.m. | -136 | -134 | -131 |
| Wed 4:22 a.m. | -142 | -134 | – |
| Wed 7:00 a.m. | -142 | -142 | -133 |
Pinnacle barely budged (-131 to -133), so read the retail move as books settling on a number rather than a signal. What it does mean is that shopping pays. BetMGM still hangs -135 while DraftKings and FanDuel ask -142, and that seven-cent gap is money you keep for making the same bet. If the moneyline is new to you, -135 means risking $135 to win $100.
With the vig removed, the consensus -138 / +118 price makes New York about a 56 percent favorite. That’s the market’s number, not ours. At -135 the bet needs to win 57.4 percent of the time to break even, which is exactly why this is a Lean and not a bigger play.
Our Call: Yankees to Close It Out at -135
Take the Yankees moneyline at -135 at BetMGM, a Lean at 0.75 units. Fried has had Boston’s number all year, the Red Sox lineup limped into October and may be without Anthony, and New York gets the last at-bat at home. In a 6.5-total game a one-run Yankees win is too likely to chase +170 on New York -1.5.
How This Pick Loses
The Case for Boston
Gray allowed three earned runs in 13 2/3 innings against New York this year, Judge is out, and Fried’s 3.42 ERA at Yankee Stadium is almost a run worse than his road mark. Boston’s bullpen (3.00 ERA) also finished ahead of New York’s (3.15), so if this is 1-1 in the seventh, the Red Sox aren’t at a disadvantage.
The weather won’t bail anyone out. The National Weather Service forecast for the Bronx calls for mostly cloudy skies, 68 degrees at first pitch, a light south wind and no rain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Short answers on Anthony, the series math and Fried’s record against Boston.
Will Boston Have Roman Anthony Back in the Lineup After He Hurt His Hand in Game 1?
It wasn’t known as of Wednesday morning. Anthony left Game 1 in the sixth inning with right hand and wrist discomfort, the same hand that kept him out from May 5 through August 29, and manager Chad Tracy said it was hard to say whether he’d be available. Check Boston’s official lineup before first pitch.
What Happens If the Red Sox Win Game 2?
The series goes to a deciding Game 3, also at Yankee Stadium. The Wild Card Series is best-of-three and the higher seed hosts every game, so Boston has to win twice in the Bronx to advance.
How Has Max Fried Pitched Against the Red Sox This Season?
He’s allowed one run in 11 2/3 innings over two starts. Fried threw eight scoreless innings with nine strikeouts at Fenway Park on April 22 and gave up one run in 3 2/3 innings on August 29 in his first start back from an elbow bone bruise.
