Chris Sale has started against the Phillies four times this season and won all four. Jesús Luzardo has thrown four pitches since September 7. That gap is the whole case for Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series at Truist Park, and it’s why we’re laying the runs: Atlanta Braves -1.5 at +120 (Fanatics), a Lean at 0.75 units, for Tuesday’s 2:00 p.m. ET first pitch.

The moneyline costs close to -200 for the same opinion. The run line pays plus money on a win by two or more, which Atlanta managed in three of Sale’s four starts against Philadelphia.

Sale Has Handled This Lineup All Year

He has, and the numbers aren’t close. Sale went 14-9 with a 2.16 ERA and 200 strikeouts in 162.2 innings, and he was even better at home (1.66 ERA in 14 starts). Against Philadelphia he made four starts, allowed six earned runs in 26 innings and struck out 29. His last outing was a 10-strikeout start against Cincinnati on September 23, so he comes in on normal rest.

Since September 72 starts, 12.2 IP, 4 ER1 relief inning, 4 pitches

Luzardo’s row is the one that makes this interesting. On a normal week he’s a fair match for Sale: he went 9-0 on the road with a 1.76 ERA, and on September 7 he shut the Braves out for nine innings with 12 strikeouts. Then his left shoulder flared up.

Nobody Knows How Long Luzardo Can Go

Not even the Phillies. Philadelphia put him on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation, backdated to September 12, and activated him Sunday, when he threw one scoreless relief inning on four pitches. Game 1 fell to him only because Zack Wheeler had to start Sunday’s clincher against Tampa Bay.

His manager said Monday that the club doesn’t “really know what to expect” from him, and the Associated Press described Luzardo as likely to work as an opener. Rookie Andrew Painter is expected to be ready behind him. If Luzardo is out after two or three innings, the Phillies will need a lot of outs from a bullpen that posted a 4.43 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP this season. Atlanta’s relievers finished at 3.44 and 1.19.

The lineup is short a bat too. Luis Arraez sprained his left ankle last Thursday, couldn’t swing on Monday, and is off the Wild Card roster, with Otto Kemp taking his spot. Atlanta’s injuries (Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach and Reynaldo López in the rotation, Lane Thomas in the outfield) bite harder in Games 2 and 3. Game 1 is Sale’s.

Philadelphia’s Bats Went Quiet in September

They did, and the finish nearly cost them a playoff spot. The Phillies hit .226 with a .660 OPS in September, which MLB.com ranks 29th in the majors for the month. The last week looked like this:

  • September 23 to 26: four straight losses to Milwaukee and Tampa Bay, with three runs scored in total.
  • September 27: a 7-3 win over the Rays that clinched the No. 6 seed.
  • Last 10 games: 4-6, against 5-5 for Atlanta over the same stretch.
  • Against lefties all season: .241 with a .705 OPS, and Sale is left-handed.

Atlanta Won the Season Series 9-4, Mostly by Multiple Runs

For a run-line bet the margin matters more: seven of Atlanta’s nine wins came by two or more runs. Sale’s four starts:

September 4Philadelphia6 IP, 2 ER, 7 KATL 5-2Covered

October history cuts the other way: Philadelphia won the teams’ last three postseason series (1993, 2022 and 2023). None of those involved this Sale or a rusty Luzardo, but it’s a reminder not to assume anything.

The Braves Price Has Barely Moved Since Sunday

It’s held in a tight band. Our odds archive has DraftKings opening the game at 5:22 p.m. ET Sunday at Braves -193, with the run line at +120 and the total at 7. Since then the DraftKings moneyline has stayed between -192 and -206. The total is the only number that really moved, dropping to 6.5 at the licensed books on Sunday night and bouncing between 6.5 and 7 on Monday.

Shopping is worth 15 cents here: Fanatics pays +120 on the same run line BetRivers prices at +105. Our line-shopping tool lays the books side by side. Pinnacle, the sharpest book we track, went from Atlanta -188 on Sunday night to -184 on Monday evening, a drift too small to build a bet around.

With the vig removed, the consensus -194 / +165 moneyline makes Atlanta about a 64 percent favorite. Those are the market’s numbers, not ours. At +120 the run line needs Atlanta to win by two or more about 45.5 percent of the time to break even.

Our Call: Braves by Two or More at +120

Take the Braves -1.5 at +120 at Fanatics, a Lean at 0.75 units. If you’re new to the run line and other spread bets, this one wins only if Atlanta wins by at least two runs. Sale has beaten this lineup four times, Philadelphia’s offense limped into October without Arraez, and its pitching plan behind a returning Luzardo will lean on a bullpen that was a run worse than Atlanta’s over the full season.

What Could Sink the Run Line

Two things, and the first worries us most:

  • A healthy Luzardo. If his shoulder is fine and he goes five or six innings, Philadelphia gets the pitcher who shut Atlanta out three weeks ago, and this becomes a low-scoring coin flip.
  • The ninth inning. Atlanta doesn’t bat in the bottom of the ninth when it’s ahead, so a 2-1 lead after eight and a half stays a one-run win. September 11 is the reminder: Sale pitched well and the Braves won 6-5.

Weather shouldn’t be a factor. The National Weather Service forecast for Truist Park calls for sun, 82 degrees at first pitch and a light east wind, with no rain in the window. Lineups weren’t official Monday night, so check them before you bet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on Luzardo’s health, Sale’s record and how the run line settles.

Is Jesús Luzardo healthy enough to start Game 1 against the Braves?

He’s cleared to pitch, but his workload is uncertain. Luzardo was on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation from September 12 until Sunday, when he threw one relief inning on four pitches. Philadelphia expects him to work as an opener, with Andrew Painter available behind him.

If I bet the Braves -1.5 and they win by one run, do I lose?

Yes. The run line at -1.5 pays only if Atlanta wins by two runs or more. A one-run Braves win, like their 6-5 win over Philadelphia on September 11, loses the bet, and so does any Phillies win.

How has Chris Sale pitched against the Phillies this year?

Very well. Sale made four starts against Philadelphia in 2026, went 4-0 and allowed six earned runs in 26 innings, a 2.08 ERA, with 29 strikeouts. He also has a 1.66 ERA at home this season.
