Jacob Misiorowski led the majors in ERA, strikeouts and WHIP this season, and he opens the National League Division Series against a left-hander who has walked 27 batters in 43 innings since joining San Diego. That mismatch is the bet, so we are laying the run and a half with Milwaukee -1.5 at +110 (FanDuel).

First pitch of Game 1 is 8:30 p.m. ET on FS1 at American Family Field. The Brewers won 103 games, took the NL Central and sat out the Wild Card round. The Padres won 91, then swept the Cubs in two games by a combined 12-1. It is a Lean, and the reasons it is not more than that take up half of this article.

LOSS
Padres 2, Brewers 3 – Milwaukee took NLDS Game 1 on a seventh-inning Contreras homer, but a one-run win leaves the -1.5 run line a run short.

Misiorowski Brings a 1.80 ERA, Ray a 5.02 Since the Trade

Milwaukee has the better starter by a wide margin. Misiorowski went 16-5 and held hitters to a .157 average, and San Diego cannot answer with its best because Michael King and Nick Pivetta pitched the two Wild Card games. Robbie Ray gets the ball instead.

2026 regular season Robbie Ray (SD, LHP) Jacob Misiorowski (MIL, RHP)

WHIP 1.35 0.80

Ray’s season line flatters him. He had a 3.08 ERA in 21 starts with San Francisco and has been a different pitcher in San Diego, where the walks have piled up and seven home runs have left the park in 43 innings. Milwaukee’s lineup reached base at a .341 clip, the kind of patient group that makes a pitcher with command trouble work.

There is a reason San Diego chose him anyway. MLB.com’s Game 1 preview notes the Brewers led the majors in production against right-handers and ranked 13th against left-handers. Starting Ray over Walker Buehler is a bet on that split. We think 27 walks in nine starts is the bigger number.

Five Days Off for Milwaukee, a Short Bench of Arms for San Diego

The bye set Milwaukee’s pitching exactly how it wanted, and the sweep did not do the same for San Diego. Misiorowski starts on five days’ rest after the club trimmed his September workload: his last three outings lasted 5.0, 3.0 and 5.1 innings, all without an earned run. Closer Trevor Megill (30 saves) and left-handers Aaron Ashby and DL Hall have had at least five days off.

That light September cuts the other way, too. If Misiorowski is held to five or six innings again, Milwaukee’s bullpen has to get nine to twelve outs with a lead, and San Diego’s late-inning group of Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller is good enough to keep a one-run deficit at one run. The Padres are without reliever Jeremiah Estrada (shoulder). Brewers third baseman Joey Ortiz had been day to day and is in the posted lineup, batting sixth.

San Diego Took Four of Six From Milwaukee This Year

The season series belongs to the Padres, 4-2, and it is the best argument against this bet. Milwaukee won two of three at home in May. San Diego swept three in August, two of them by a single run.

  • May 12-14 in Milwaukee: Brewers 6-4, Padres 3-1, Brewers 7-1.
  • Aug. 10-12 in San Diego: Padres 3-2, Padres 11-2, Padres 4-3.
  • The one that should worry Brewers backers: the 3-1 Padres win on May 13 was the night Misiorowski struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings. He left with nothing on the board against him, and Milwaukee still lost.

Over 162 games the gap is wider than those six suggest. Milwaukee outscored its opponents by 214 runs (832 to 618) and went 55-26 at home. San Diego’s margin was 41 runs (722 to 681), and it finished 40-41 on the road.

Bettors Have Backed the Padres Since Thursday

The Brewers have gotten cheaper every day this line has been up, and we are betting against that move. Our odds archive holds about 6,900 book captures of this game since DraftKings posted it early Thursday. DraftKings at each turn (times ET):

DraftKings Moneyline (MIL / SD) Brewers -1.5 Total
Thu. Oct. 1, 1:02 a.m. (first post) -227 / +184 +105 7
Thu. Oct. 1, 9:32 a.m. -233 / +189 -105 7
Fri. Oct. 2, 11:12 a.m. -218 / +178 +101 7
Fri. Oct. 2, 6:42 p.m. -205 / +167 +110 7
Sat. Oct. 3, 8:22 a.m. -203 / +166 +110 7

The biggest step came Friday evening, around the time Ray was reported as San Diego’s starter. We read that timing as related, not proven. Pinnacle moved further, from Brewers -222 on Thursday to -186 on Saturday morning. A move like that deserves respect, and it is a reason to keep this bet small. What the move gives us is a better number: Brewers -1.5 paid -105 on Thursday morning and pays +110 now.

Kalshi’s game market sits where the sportsbooks do. Milwaukee traded at 64 cents bid, 65 asked on Saturday morning, and the consensus moneyline of -198 / +166 works out to about 64% for the Brewers once the vig is removed.

Why the Run Line and Not the Moneyline

We take Milwaukee -1.5 at +110 because the moneyline costs too much for what we know. At -200 you risk two to win one on a team the market already makes a 64% favorite. The run line pays better than even money for the same opinion, with one condition attached: the Brewers have to win by two.

That condition is real. The total is 7, low enough that one-run finals are common, and a home team that leads after the top of the ninth does not bat again, which takes away a half inning to add a run. A 3-2 Brewers win loses this ticket. For how Milwaukee’s bigger picture looks from here, see our piece on the Brewers’ World Series odds.

We are holding it to three-quarters of a unit. The starter mismatch is the whole case, and against it sit a market leaning the other way, a season series San Diego won, and a Padres team that won eight of its last ten in the regular season and both Wild Card games.

Frequently Asked Questions

Four questions about Game 1 in Milwaukee.

What Does Brewers -1.5 Mean in Game 1?

It means Milwaukee has to win by two or more runs for the bet to cash. A one-run Brewers win loses, the same as a Padres win. In exchange for that extra run you are paid +110, compared with about -200 for a Brewers win by any score.

Why Is Robbie Ray Starting Game 1 for the Padres?

Michael King and Nick Pivetta started the two Wild Card games against the Cubs, so neither is available. San Diego went with the left-handed Ray over Walker Buehler, and MLB.com notes Milwaukee hit right-handers better than any team in baseball while ranking 13th against left-handers.

How Deep Will Jacob Misiorowski Pitch for the Brewers?

Probably five or six innings. Milwaukee managed his workload in September, and his last three starts lasted 5.0, 3.0 and 5.1 innings. He is on five days’ rest, but the Brewers’ bullpen should expect to cover at least three innings.

Who Won the Season Series Between the Padres and Brewers?

San Diego won it 4-2. Milwaukee took two of three at home in May, and the Padres swept three games in San Diego in August, two of them by one run.
