The market is asking Ohio State to win by more than two touchdowns in a game it expects to produce about 45 points, against the defense that has allowed the fewest points per game in the country. We land on the other side of that number and take Iowa +14.5 at -115 (DraftKings), a Lean and not a big position.

Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS at Kinnick Stadium, with ESPN’s College GameDay on site. No. 5 Ohio State is 3-1 and making its first trip to Iowa City since 2017. No. 14 Iowa is 4-0 after beating Michigan 20-19 in Ann Arbor on the final play last Saturday. More Saturday coverage lives on our college football betting page.

A 14.5-Point Spread on a 45.5 Total Means Roughly 30-15

Split the 45.5 total by the 14.5 spread and the market’s implied score is Ohio State 30, Iowa 15.5. For the favorite to cover, it has to reach about 30 against a team that has not given up 20 to anyone, or hold Iowa near single digits.

Game Ohio State (points scored) Iowa (points allowed)
Sept. 5 56 vs. Ball State 0 vs. Northern Illinois
Sept. 12 23 at Texas (L 24-23) 13 vs. Iowa State
Sept. 19 59 vs. Kent State 0 vs. Northern Iowa (FCS)
Sept. 26 42 vs. Illinois 19 at Michigan
Per game 45.0 8.0

The row that matters is Sept. 12. Ohio State’s only road game was also its only game against a ranked team, and it scored 23. Iowa’s 8.0 points allowed ranks first nationally, and it sits 10th in yards allowed at 239.8 a game, per Eleven Warriors’ preview.

Read Iowa’s column with the same skepticism. Two of those four games were shutouts of Northern Illinois and an FCS team. Against power-conference opponents Iowa won 16-13 and 20-19, which is a good defense playing close games, not a dominant team.

Iowa’s Run Game Is How a Two-Touchdown Underdog Stays Close

Iowa runs for 215.5 yards a game at 6.53 yards per carry, fifth in FBS, and that is the path to a cover. Long drives on the ground keep the clock moving and keep Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith on the sideline. Ohio State’s run defense gave it reason to try: Illinois ran for 199 yards in Columbus last week.

  • Iowa backfield: Kamari Moulton has 284 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries, and three other backs have at least 128 yards each.
  • Iowa quarterback: Hank Brown is 66-of-97 for 700 yards and five touchdowns, and he has not thrown an interception in four starts.
  • Ohio State passing: Sayin has completed 72.2% of his throws (83-of-115) for 1,206 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception. Smith has 33 catches for 617 yards and seven scores, including 12 for 217 and four touchdowns against Illinois.
  • Ohio State rushing: 156.8 yards a game, with Bo Jackson at 283 yards on 50 carries.

The gap between those last two bullets is the game. Ohio State throws for 365.3 yards a game and Iowa allows 152.0. One of those numbers gives on Saturday, and Ohio State’s one road trip so far ended a point short at Texas.

Both Teams Lost a Starter on Friday’s Availability Report

Ohio State is without starting right tackle Phillip Daniels, and Iowa is without starting strong safety Tyler Brown.

Status (Oct. 2 report) Ohio State Iowa
Out (starters) RT Phillip Daniels SS Tyler Brown
Out (others) RB Anthony Rogers, LB Braxton Rembert, three reserves DB Kyler Gerardy
Questionable DB Jay Timmons (hamstring) DB Darion Jones, LB Derek Weisskopf
Cleared DE Zion Grady, TE Bennett Christian None listed

Daniels was hurt in the fourth quarter at Texas, and Austin Siereveld takes his spot at right tackle. Brown limped through the Michigan game with a soft-tissue injury that had already cost him the first two weeks; Villanova transfer Anthony Hawkins started those two games and steps back in, per Hawk Fanatic’s report. A backup safety against Smith is the part of this bet we like least. The Big Ten also publishes a gameday report, so check Timmons and the two questionable Hawkeyes before kickoff.

Five Books Hang 14.5, One Still Sits on 14

The licensed books are split by half a point, and the half point is the one that matters. Fourteen is two touchdowns, one of the more common margins in football, so +14.5 wins on a 14-point loss while +14 only refunds the stake. We pay 10 cents at DraftKings for that hook. Saturday morning’s board:

Book Iowa spread Ohio State spread Moneyline (OSU / IOWA)
DraftKings +14.5 (-115) -14.5 (-105) -625 / +455
Fanatics +14.5 (-115) -14.5 (-105) -650 / +475
Caesars +14.5 (-117) -14.5 (-104) -625 / +450
FanDuel +14.5 (-118) -14.5 (-104) -710 / +490
BetMGM +14 (-105) -14 (-112) -650 / +475
BetRivers +14.5 (-117) -14.5 (-109) -770 / +480

There is no line-move story to lean on. Our odds archive has about 21,900 book captures of this game since DraftKings posted it on Sept. 23 at Ohio State -14 with a 44.5 total. The spread touched -13.5 and -14.5 on Sept. 27 after both teams played, and it has sat at -14 or -14.5 since. Pinnacle went from -13.5 on Sept. 27 to -14.5 by Oct. 1.

Kalshi’s game market sits where the books do. Ohio State traded at 84 cents bid, 85 asked on Saturday morning, and the consensus moneyline of -650 / +475 works out to about 83% once the vig is removed.

How Ohio State Covers Anyway

Ohio State covers if its passing game does to Iowa what it did to Illinois, and that is a real possibility. Three things would beat this ticket:

  1. Smith against a reshuffled secondary. Iowa has allowed very few big plays, but it has not seen a receiver like this one, and it is down a starting safety.
  2. An early two-score lead. Iowa throws for 213.5 yards a game. If it trails 17-3, it is not built to chase.
  3. A letdown. Iowa won on the last play at Michigan seven days ago.

History cuts both ways. Ohio State leads the series 49-15-3 and won the last two meetings by a combined 89-17, both in Columbus. Its last visit to Kinnick was 2017, when Iowa beat the then-No. 3 Buckeyes 55-24. Weather will not help either side: the National Weather Service calls for sun, 65 to 68 degrees and a light south wind.

Our Card: Iowa +14.5 for Three-Quarters of a Unit

Take Iowa +14.5 at -115. We expect Ohio State to win the game. We do not expect it to score 30 on this defense on the road without its right tackle, and Iowa’s run game gives it a way to shorten the afternoon. It stays a Lean at 0.75 units because the market has had this number all week and never blinked, and because Iowa’s best defensive numbers came against its two weakest opponents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Three things bettors are asking about Ohio State and Iowa.

Should I Take Iowa +14 at a Cheaper Price Instead of +14.5?

We would pay for the half point. BetMGM had Iowa +14 at -105 on Saturday morning and DraftKings had +14.5 at -115. A 14-point Ohio State win refunds the +14 ticket and cashes the +14.5 ticket, and two touchdowns is a common final margin.

Is Iowa’s No. 1 Scoring Defense as Good as the Numbers Say?

It is good, and the 8.0 points per game overstates it. Two of Iowa’s four games were shutouts of Northern Illinois and FCS Northern Iowa. Against Iowa State and Michigan it allowed 13 and 19 points, which is still strong and is the more honest sample for Saturday.

When Did Ohio State Last Play at Kinnick Stadium?

Ohio State last played in Iowa City in 2017 and lost 55-24 as the No. 3 team in the country. The Buckeyes have won the two meetings since, both in Columbus, by a combined 89-17, and Ryan Day is 2-0 against Iowa.
