Three of the coaches on James Madison’s sideline Saturday were drawing a Liberty paycheck last season. The quarterback who threw for 3,395 yards and 38 total touchdowns for the Dukes in 2025 is at UCF, the head coach who won 12 games with him is at UCLA, and 10 players followed him there. That is a lot of turnover to lay nearly a touchdown on in a noon opener, which is why the play is Liberty +6.5 (-110) at BetMGM, a standard-sized position rather than a heavy one.

None of that says Liberty wins. James Madison is 65-5 at Bridgeforth Stadium since 2016, and this Liberty program is 0-5 outright as an underdog under Jamey Chadwell. The argument is about six and a half points, against a team meeting itself for the first time.

Most Of The Team That Beat Liberty 31-13 Is Somewhere Else Now

The James Madison that reached the College Football Playoff last December has been taken apart and reassembled in nine months. Bob Chesney went 12-2, won the Sun Belt at 8-0, and left for UCLA in early December, before the 51-34 first-round loss at Oregon. Alonza Barnett III, who accounted for three touchdowns against Liberty last September, transferred to UCF. Wayne Knight, who ran for 89 yards that day, is gone, and the transfer list runs through Auburn and Colorado before it reaches the 10 players who went to Westwood.

Into that walked Billy Napier, hired on December 4, 2025, seven weeks after Florida fired him with the Gators at 3-4. His record before Gainesville was 40-12 at Louisiana, and the market assumes a coach of that pedigree lands on his feet. He might. But offensive coordinator Cam Aiken is installing the ground-based system he ran at East Tennessee State, defensive coordinator Robert Bala and two other assistants arrived from Liberty’s own 2025 staff, and the quarterback running all of it had not been named as of Tuesday.

Two Sealed Envelopes At Quarterback, One Line That Has Played Together

Neither coach has announced a starting quarterback. At James Madison it is Camden Coleman, a Richmond transfer who threw for 2,031 yards with 13 touchdowns and five picks for the Spiders in 2024, against JC Evans; Napier told the Daily News-Record on Tuesday he would keep the decision to himself. At Liberty the projected depth chart has narrowed a four-man room to Wake Forest transfer Deshawn Purdie or Jaylen Henderson from West Virginia, with last year’s starter Ethan Vasko behind them.

Where the rosters diverge is everything around the quarterback. Liberty projects four returning offensive line starters in front of its deepest backfield in years, headed by Justin Marshall and Duke transfer Peyton Jones. James Madison returns All-Sun Belt lineman Zach Greenberg and back George Pettaway, but the units around them are new to each other.

Then there is the coach. Chadwell had surgery in January for what he called a serious but treatable condition and told the AP in August that his health cost the 2025 team a coach who could do the job properly. Four of last year’s eight losses were by a touchdown or less, and the market is pricing the 4-8.

Conditions should not decide anything: the National Weather Service has Harrisonburg mostly cloudy with a high near 87, a 40 percent chance of showers and light wind.

The Number Has Been Sliding Toward Liberty Since Labor Day

The market has moved a full point toward the Flames in five days. Our odds archive holds 4,925 captures of this game from an 11-book panel going back to August 1: the consensus sat at James Madison -6.5 for most of the summer, ticked up to -7 on August 31, then gave the whole point back by Wednesday.

Pinnacle, which we capture separately, went further: it held James Madison -6.5 from Monday through Friday afternoon, then posted -5.5 at 7:55 p.m. ET Friday, a full point below the three retail shops still hanging 6.5. We would not call that proof anyone knows something. It is a market that had a summer to price this rebuild at a touchdown and is now, on the eve of the game, less sure.

Why 6.5 At BetMGM Is The Number, And What The Public Is Doing

The half-point is the whole reason to shop this game. At Friday night’s pull, seven of the ten books on our panel had come down to James Madison -6, while BetMGM (-110), MyBookie (-110) and FanDuel (-115) still offered Liberty +6.5. The hook turns a six-point James Madison win from a push into a win, and our line-shopping tool shows where 6.5 is still posted.

The public is on the other side. VegasInsider’s consensus page lists 64 percent of spread tickets and 85 percent of spread money on the Dukes; those are that site’s figures, and public splits are a weak tool on their own. They do explain how a number drifts toward the team fewer people are betting: the books keep finding the balancing price closer to Liberty.

The Case Against This Ticket Is Bridgeforth Stadium

James Madison at home is the strongest argument for laying the points. The Dukes are 65-5 in Harrisonburg since 2016, have not lost a non-conference home game since 2015, and have won 21 straight against Virginia schools, per A Sea of Red’s preview. Liberty’s 26-21 FCS playoff upset here on November 29, 2014 is the last time the Flames won in Harrisonburg.

  • Last September in Lynchburg: James Madison won 31-13 as a 7.5-point favorite, but it was 10-10 at halftime and 17-13 entering the fourth quarter before Barnett scored twice on the ground, per the ESPN recap.
  • Chadwell as an underdog: 0-5 straight up and 1-4 against the spread at Liberty; the lone cover came at Old Dominion as a 14.5-point dog last season.

The counter-case writes itself: the player who broke the game open was Barnett and the coach who called it was Chesney. When we handicapped the Dukes at Oregon in December, the case rested on that quarterback and that staff. Neither is in the building.

Where We Land: Liberty And The Hook

We are on Liberty +6.5 as a Standard Play, one unit. James Madison is the more talented program and the market is right to favor it at home. But the price asks a first-year coach, two new coordinators and an unannounced quarterback to beat an in-state rival by a touchdown in their first game together, and the lowest number on the board spent Friday night walking away from that ask. If Liberty’s veteran line keeps its own new quarterback upright and the game lands inside a score, the ticket cashes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answered with Friday night’s numbers, which will move before the noon kickoff.

Is James Madison still a touchdown favorite over Liberty?

Not everywhere. Seven of the ten books we track had James Madison -6 on Friday night, September 4, 2026, while BetMGM, MyBookie and FanDuel still showed -6.5 and Pinnacle had moved to -5.5.

Who is starting at quarterback for JMU and Liberty in the opener?

Neither program had announced a starter as of Friday. James Madison’s competition is Camden Coleman against JC Evans; Liberty’s projected depth chart has it between Deshawn Purdie and Jaylen Henderson.

Why take Liberty when they are 0-5 as an underdog under Chadwell?

Because the bet is on the points rather than the upset, and a loss by six or fewer still cashes. This James Madison team has a first-year head coach, two new coordinators and an unnamed quarterback.

Does the rebuilt JMU roster mean last year’s 31-13 result does not matter?

It matters less than the final score suggests. That game was 10-10 at halftime and 17-13 with a quarter to play before Alonza Barnett ran for two late touchdowns, and Barnett, Wayne Knight and Bob Chesney have all left.
