Kahlil Benson went undrafted out of Indiana in April, and on Monday night he starts at left tackle for Kansas City with Josh Simmons out, which puts a rookie on Patrick Mahomes’ blind side in Mahomes’ first game since December’s ACL and LCL surgery. The pass rush across from him led the NFL with 68 sacks last season. That mismatch is why we’re taking Broncos +2.5 at -108 (BetMGM), weighted at one unit.

Denver arrives as the defending AFC West champion at 14-3 with all 53 players available; Kansas City went 6-11 and opens with two starters out. The number has come down from 3 to 2.5, so this is a lean on matchup at a fair price. We had Denver at +124 on our Week 1 board on September 2; that price is gone.

Broncos 10, Chiefs 31 – Mahomes and a patched-up line handled the Denver rush, and Kansas City pulled away to cover the full 21 points past our +2.5.

Both Quarterbacks Are Coming Back From Surgery, and Denver Owns the Division Now

This is the first time Denver has ever opened a season in Kansas City, and the division has flipped. The Broncos went 14-3, ended Kansas City’s run of nine straight AFC West titles, beat Buffalo 33-30 in overtime and lost the AFC Championship Game 10-7 to New England with Jarrett Stidham at quarterback, because Bo Nix had broken his right ankle in overtime against the Bills.

Kansas City’s year was worse. Mahomes tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee against the Chargers on December 14, had surgery the next day, and the Chiefs finished 6-11 on a six-game losing streak, out of the playoffs for the first time since 2014 and scoring 21.3 points a game, the franchise’s lowest since 2012. Andy Reid brought back Eric Bieniemy as coordinator and held Mahomes out of the entire preseason.

An Undrafted Rookie at Left Tackle Against the League’s Best Pass Rush

Simmons is out, and the replacement has never started an NFL game. Josh Simmons, the 2025 first-round pick, has a lower-back injury that has cost him more than three weeks, and ESPN reports Kahlil Benson will start in his place, the first undrafted offensive rookie to start a Week 1 game under Reid.

The rush he draws came within four sacks of the NFL record. Denver’s 68 sacks trailed only the 1984 Bears’ 72, with Nik Bonitto’s 14 leading the way. Safety Chamarri Conner (knee) is also out, and per the official report, Chris Jones was added Friday with a calf issue, sat out Saturday and carries no status. Denver’s lone listing, Marvin Mims Jr., practiced in full all week.

Kansas City Opened -3 in August, and a Month of Betting Took It to -2.5

DraftKings’ first snapshot in our odds archive, on August 13, had Kansas City -3 (-105), the total 42.5 and the Broncos +130. The 3 held for almost a month, the total ticked up on September 7, and the spread has sat at 2.5 since September 10. Pinnacle moved the same way, from -3 (+107) in August to -2.5 (+101) now.

What +2.5 at -108 Buys You That the +115 Moneyline Doesn’t

At BetMGM on Sunday night the Broncos were +2.5 (-108), the moneyline Chiefs -135 / Broncos +115, and the total 43.5 (Over -108 / Under -110); the live line below tracks it from here. Vig removed, -135 implies about a 55 percent chance for Kansas City, the market’s read rather than ours.

So why the points instead of +115? The moneyline pays more but loses on any Chiefs win, while +2.5 turns a one- or two-point Kansas City win into a cover. DraftKings’ public splits show a divided room: 60 percent of spread tickets are on Denver, but 53 percent of the money is on Kansas City -2.5.

Denver Swept the Series, but Mahomes Only Played in One of Those Games

Denver’s 2-0 in 2025 needs an asterisk. The 22-19 win at Empower Field on November 16 came against Mahomes (29 of 45 for 276 yards). The 20-13 Christmas win at Arrowhead, Denver’s first in Kansas City since 2015, came against third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun after Mahomes and Gardner Minshew tore knee ligaments in consecutive weeks. Mahomes is 13-2 against Denver as a starter.

Nix’s two games against Kansas City last season produced a modest 50 of 75 for 477 yards, per NBC Sports. Kansas City went 4-9-1 against the spread as a favorite in 2025 and 8-1 to the under at home.

Why It Stays a Standard Play: Denver Won 11 One-Score Games

Denver’s 14-3 was built on 11 one-score wins and an NFL-record 12 regular-season comebacks. Nix’s numbers dipped from his rookie year (63.4 percent, 25 touchdowns, 11 interceptions), Sean Payton has handed play-calling to new coordinator Davis Webb, and the defense lost John Franklin-Myers and Dre Greenlaw.

⚠
Why This Isn’t a Stronger Call: Mahomes at Home, 13-2 Against Denver

Kansas City allowed 19.3 points a game last season, sixth-best in the league even in a 6-11 year, and Steve Spagnuolo’s defense is intact. Mahomes has lost to Denver twice in 15 starts, and Travis Kelce is back for a 14th season. Weather is a heat story, not a wind story: 87 degrees and clear at kickoff, south wind around 12 mph, per the National Weather Service.

The Points at Arrowhead: Broncos +2.5, Weighted at One Unit

Take Broncos +2.5 at -108 (BetMGM). The league’s most productive pass rush meets a first-time starter at left tackle in front of a quarterback nine months off knee reconstruction, Denver is the healthier team, and the market has spent a month moving its way. It stays a Standard Play at one unit because Mahomes is 13-2 against this opponent, Kansas City’s defense was top-six even in a lost season, and Denver’s 14-3 leaned on close-game results. We are not carding the total.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mahomes’ knee, kickoff, the points versus the moneyline, and what last year’s sweep is worth.

How much will Patrick Mahomes’ knee limit him in his first game since the ACL and LCL surgery?

Nobody knows yet. He practiced in full all week with no game status, but he took zero preseason snaps and is nine months out from the December 15 surgery, with an undrafted rookie protecting his blind side against a 68-sack pass rush.

What time is Broncos vs. Chiefs on September 14, and what channel is it on?

Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET (7:15 p.m. in Kansas City) at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, on ESPN and ABC with the ManningCast on ESPN2.

Why take Broncos +2.5 instead of the Denver moneyline at +115?

The moneyline pays more but loses on any Chiefs win, and +2.5 turns a one- or two-point Kansas City win into a cover. The number has already come down from 3, so this is a lean at a fair price, not a claim that the line is wrong.

Does Denver’s sweep of Kansas City last season tell us much with Mahomes back?

Less than 2-0 suggests. The 22-19 win in Denver came against Mahomes; the 20-13 Christmas win at Arrowhead came against third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun after Mahomes and Gardner Minshew both tore knee ligaments.
