How to Read the Chart

Find your hand in the left column, run across to the dealer's upcard column, and do what the letter says. The only skill is knowing whether your hand is a hard total, a soft total, or a pair, which tells you which of the three sections to look in.
The letters in the cells compress a decision and its fallback into one code. H is hit and S is stand. D means double, and if the table will not let you double this hand, hit instead. Hard Totals: The Logic of the Ugly Hands
Hard totals are where the game’s tension lives, because 12 through 16 are the hands that can bust and usually wish they could not. The famous exception is 12 against a 2 or 3, where you hit, because those upcards bust the dealer a little less often and a 12 only busts to a ten. Hard 12 against 4, 5, or 6 stands.
Against a dealer 7 through ace, defense stops working: the dealer finishes with 17 or better too often for a 14 or 15 to survive by waiting. So the chart hits 12 through 16 into strong upcards, accepting bust risk because standing loses even more. Hitting 16 against a ten is the most hated instruction in the game, and the numbers behind it are unsentimental: both options lose more often than they win, and hitting simply loses less. The strong hard totals are simpler. Hard 17 and up always stand; the bust risk of hitting is unpayable. Eleven and 10 are the doubling engines: 11 doubles against everything but an ace on a standard six-deck S17 game, and 10 doubles against 2 through 9. Nine doubles into the dealer’s weakest cards, 3 through 6. Eight and below just hit; no upcard makes doubling a total that small profitable off two cards.
Hands of three or more cards use the same rows with one simplification built in: doubling and surrender are two-card options, so a multi-card hand just reads the hit-or-stand answer for its total. Draw a 3 on your 9-3 and you now hold hard 15, played from the hard 15 row like any other. The chart never expires mid-hand; the hand just moves to a new row as it grows.
Soft Totals: Free Swings and the A-7 Problem
A soft hand cannot bust on one card, and the chart treats that free swing as an invitation to attack the dealer’s weak upcards. That is why the soft rows are full of doubles that surprise new players: the ace’s flexibility means a bad draw demotes the hand instead of destroying it, so putting extra money against a 5 or 6 is aggression with a safety net.
The pattern runs in a wedge. Soft 13 and 14, ace-2 and ace-3, double only against the dealer’s very weakest cards, 5 and 6. Soft 15 and 16 add the 4. Soft 17 adds the 3, and soft 18 doubles against 3 through 6 while standing against a 2. Ace-7, soft 18, deserves its reputation as the most misplayed hand in blackjack, because 18 sounds finished and frequently is not. Against a dealer 9, ten, or ace, an 18 is a losing total on average, and the chart says hit, taking the free chance to improve. Against 2, 7, and 8 it stands, and against 3 through 6 it doubles. When the dealer hits soft 17 instead of standing, exactly six cells move on the six-deck chart. Eleven against an ace becomes a double. Soft 18 against a 2 becomes a double instead of a stand, and soft 19 against a 6 does the same. Where surrender is offered, 15 against an ace and 17 against an ace both become surrenders, and a pair of eights against an ace surrenders rather than splits. The other toggles behave the same way at smaller scale. Turning double-after-split off removes the marginal splits: fours stop splitting entirely, and twos, threes, and sixes tighten by a column or two. Restricting doubles to 10 and 11 erases every soft double and the 9 double, which is a bigger downgrade than it looks.
